Survey: Secure IT Retirement

We want your insight into how organisations are disposing of their end-of-life IT…

Take our survey (now closed) and you could win a voucher for Ireland’s Blue Book for a weekend away for two in a location of your choosing! The growth in data volumes is accelerating rapidly, and the increasing threat of cyber-crime means that companies are more conscious than ever before of the information security measures that they should have in place to protect their assets.

However, when it comes to disposing of their end-of-life IT assets, many companies fail to display the same level of caution. Organisations often have little or no control over their IT retirement process with purchasing decisions solely focused on finding the cheapest service. However, companies that fail to ensure secure disposal of their assets could find their sensitive business data ending up in the wrong hands.

Failure to comply with regulatory changes stemming from the impending General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is set to come into force in 2018, will have far more serious consequences for businesses. Those who fail to demonstrate compliance could find themselves liable to fines of up to 4% of global turnover or €20M, depending on which is greater. If the financial repercussions are extreme, the damage to a company’s reputation in the event of an actual breach could prove to be even more insurmountable.

With all this in mind, AMI, in association with TechPro, is currently carrying out a survey to find out more about organisations’ disposal of their end-of-life IT assets. The results will identify the potential blind-spots in organisations’ information security strategies, and highlight the changes that will need to be made to achieve GDPR compliance.
