What is WEEE Recyling?
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a term that applies to anything that has a plug or runs on batteries. Once it reaches its end-of-life it must be suitably recycled.
Vyta specialises in the recycling of IT equipment including desktops, laptops, monitors, data storage devices, printers, mobile phones and more for companies.
What does the WEEE Directive mean for UK businesses?
The EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into effect in February 2003, requiring member EU states to maximise the separation, collection, reuse, and recycling of ewaste.
When the UK left the European Union, they implemented the WEEE Regulations 2013 to replicate much of the same provisions from the EU directive.
The WEEE Regulations require UK businesses to take responsibility for their ewaste and divert electronics from landfill.
This means that businesses must recycle their own WEEE or employ a qualified company, like Vyta, to process it on their behalf.

Need to recycle your IT assets? Vyta offers WEEE Recycling management that is both safe and environmentally friendly.
Whether you have a few used PCs or an entire data centre of redundant assets, Vyta manages the full process – from collection to processing, data destruction or onsite shredding and recycling or disposal.
Meeting your local and EU regulations
Vyta guarantees that all recycled equipment meets the relevant local and EU regulations on the processing of electrical waste.
We provide a complete trail of the waste material’s journey to its final location. This assures clients that all processed waste remains within the EU. We also ensure that no data is left on any equipment.
You’ll receive a Certificate of Destruction for your assets. This guarantees that all our recycled equipment has the same level of security and traceability as refurbished equipment.
Vyta are a WEEE Recycling compliant company
Vyta operates an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) Centre and multiple R2v3 sites.
IT equipment that is unsuitable for resale is processed for recycling after it has been securely shredded to destroy any data risk. Suitable materials including metals and plastics are separated and recovered to assist with recycling material recovery. Some specific items such as rechargeable batteries and printer cartridges are passed for specialist recycling.
How does Vyta process WEEE?
Vyta is committed to responsible IT equipment recycling and the preventing ewaste reaching landfill, we adhere to the principles of the circular economy and provide the most sustainable service possible, meaning we prioritise the reuse of working equipment and components.
Reuse
With a zero-landfill policy, Vyta focuses on the reuse of equipment in the first instance.
Where it is not possible to reuse the equipment collected, it will be stripped down to component parts for either resale or recycling by material type.
Ewaste Recycling
For IT equipment that cannot be reused, it is data sanitised before being broken down, segregated and filtered into various material types such as plastics, metals and circuitry.
Our ISO 140001 approved process offers the best downstream recycling experience as we choose our recycling partners not on price, but by their best in class recovery rates.
We make disposing of your WEEE simple, sustainable, cost-effective and safe.

Ewaste as defined by Britannica
The problem with ewaste
Did you know we throw away 160,000 laptops in the EU every day, a staggering 70% of which could have been reused? These laptops contribute to ewaste, the fastest growing waste stream in the world.
The manufacturing, shipping and dumping of electrical waste has a massive impact not only on the environment, but also on human health as toxic materials leech into the ground.
Despite having ceased value to the user, these items, or components, may still be in working order. Even if this is not the case, a number of rare earth metals and other materials can still be recovered.
It is the responsibility of every person, and every organisation, to choose sustainable solutions where possible, and protect our planet from further environmental degradation.
We’re here to help.
Over 50 million tonnes of ewaste is discarded globally every year, the weight of nearly 4,500 Eiffel towers.
Ewaste creates a detrimental effect on the environment through dumping and incineration.
Full of toxic chemicals like cadmium, lead and mercury, ewaste pollutes water supplies and affects human health.
Electronic devices sent to landfill risk being intercepted by opportunists leading to a data breach.
Vyta’s efforts to reduce ewaste
194,000 IT Assets processed last year
0% of material received ends up in landfill
Offset 20,000 tonnes of C02 emissions
Right to Repair
Supporting the Right to Repair movement is an important step in reducing ewaste and reversing some of the damage done to our planet by the production and improper disposal of consumer electronics.
By giving users the access and tools to repair or refurbish their devices, the need for new products decreases and more items are diverted from landfills. This not only helps reduce ewaste, but also saves companies significant costs in terms of product replacement.
The Vyta team are IT hardware experts, able to replace nearly every component in computers or laptops and produce grade-A refurbished IT assets which are resold to businesses, schools or directly to end-users.
Additionally, the right to repair movement can also help lower the cost of repairs and parts for customers, reducing the overall costs associated with information technology asset disposal for businesses. This creates great opportunities for IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) providers, like Vyta, who specialise in securely wiping, destroying or reselling electronics.

R2 Certification
Even if you are following WEEE Recycling requirements, your ewaste could still end up overseas where there are no regulations to protect the environment or human health.
How do you know that your ITAD company is operating ethically and sustainably?
By checking if they are R2 Certified.
What is R2 Certification?
R2 Certification is a global sustainability standard that ensures proper handling and disposal of electronic products in terms of data security and sustainability. Certified recyclers must provide evidence of data security protocols, safe handling of hazardous materials, and compliance with recycling regulations including downstream vendors.
Why is R2 Certification important?
It’s important that businesses choose an ITAD company with R2 certification, as the strict requirements ensure that all data is securely managed, the environment is suitably protected, and that used electronics are disposed of in a way that aligns with sustainability goals including the reuse of data safe working electronics rather than their needless recycling.
R2v3 – the latest version of the R2 standard
Vyta’s Chelmsford, Dublin and Mallusk sites all hold R2v3 certification, the latest version of the R2 standard for responsible and sustainable electronics recycling, featuring higher requirements for data security and environmentally responsible practices.
Choosing an R2 certified company provides total peace of mind for secure data management and environmental responsibility.
