Vyta conducted a survey of 137 senior IT decision-makers throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland to understand how organisations manage end-of-life IT assets. The findings highlighted two recurring issues: many businesses were failing to recover residual value from retired equipment, while others lacked clear assurance around secure data erasure.
Companies may be increasing their GDPR and data security risk
Almost one-third of respondents (32%) who said they used third-party IT retirement companies admitted that they did not receive formal confirmation from their providers that their data had been completely erased. This can increase GDPR and data security risk, particularly where organisations cannot demonstrate that data has been securely erased and cannot be recovered.
The results also revealed that the majority of organisations were failing to recover the value of old assets they disposed of, despite the potential residual value of IT equipment. 70% of businesses surveyed said they did not recover any value when retiring old assets.
