This week, Sue Bywater-Read, Vyta’s Strategic Relationship Director, celebrates 25 years in the IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) industry. Her journey from part-time receptionist to industry leader is a remarkable tale of perseverance, mentorship, and innovation.
A Journey of Growth and Leadership
Sue began her career in ITAD in 2000 as a single mother of three, taking on a receptionist role that fit around her children’s school hours. Recognising she wanted and needed to advance in her career, she pursued a postgraduate degree in 2005 while working full-time. From her receptionist role Sue moved into HR administration, then to multiple leadership roles across sales and IT asset management, gaining experience, building her network and discovering more and more about the ITAD industry.
“I had no option but to succeed,” Sue recalls. “Failure wasn’t an option.”
The importance of Mentorship
When talking about her ITAD journey, Sue emphasises the importance of mentorship, highlighting its role in building confidence and fostering growth amongst companies and teams, “Mentorship isn’t just about guidance—it’s about giving others the confidence to step forward, take risks, and realise their full potential.”
Having been mentored and supported by colleagues and connections throughout her career, she now helps others navigate work, their goals and career aspirations, particularly women who are getting started in the ITAD industry.
“I encourage people to push beyond their comfort zones and trust in their abilities,” she says.
At Vyta, Sue is very proud of her team and cultivates an environment where her team feels empowered to grow, take initiative, and develop the confidence to succeed.
Driving ITAD Forward
Over 25 years, Sue has witnessed ITAD evolve from a niche service into a global industry focused on security, compliance, and sustainability.
At the ITAD Summit 2024 in Miami, Sue participated in the “Tech Trailblazers” panel, sharing insights on the industries evolution and the importance of breaking barriers for women in ITAD.
She emphasises collaboration over competition, recognising that working together drives greater success.
“We are stronger when we work together, the industry has changed—now, it’s about partnerships and shared success.”
Looking Ahead
As Sue looks to the future, she remains dedicated to fostering new talent and strengthening industry partnerships.
“We have a responsibility to support the next generation,” she says. “By sharing knowledge and experiences, we create opportunities for others to thrive.”
Sue’s legacy in ITAD is one of resilience and progress—proof that with the right mindset and support, barriers can be broken, and lasting change can be achieved.
